Ty Segall ‘Freedom’s Goblin’

Dillon Price is the founder and sole author of Sound Renaissance. With a background in English and mass communications and a passion for independent music, Price launched SR in 2016.

(8.5 / 10)

Genre: Garage, psych
Release Date: 1/26/2018
Label: Drag City

Purchase: MP3 / CD / Vinyl

Much of Segall’s discography has been built on home studio recordings, with freedom to dabble in the art of innovation and lo-fi eccentricity. But like his more recent work, Segall’s 10th full-length album, Freedom’s Goblin, was recorded in multiple studios throughout Chicago, Memphis, and Los Angeles – including his home studio. He has called on legendary producer, Steve Albini, to call some of the shots – alongside F. Bermudez and Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell. Segall is a punk rocker at heart – a brash essence that always shines through the surface on some of his most composed ballads, as heard on the orchestral “Rain” and glam-driven “My Lady’s on Fire.” He doesn’t exhaust much of his efforts rehearsing or laying down tracks in the studio. With the backing of longtime collaborators, Mikal Cronin and Charles Moothart, Segall loosens the nuts and bolts and lets each song manifest.

Freedom’s Goblin marks one of Segall’s most prolific and eclectic albums to date. It shares some common ground with his 2017 self-titled album, with some tracks embodying the turbulent guitar jam spontaneity and acid-washed vocals of “Break A Guitar.” However, Segall throws in an occasional bombshell. “Despoiler of Cadaver” is a retro-funk caravan with splashes of glam appeal. The unhinged guitar licks bask in machine-esq drums and pulsing bass-lines. “Meaning” is an all-out fuzz-punk assault, with the abrasive scream of his wife, Denée Segall, taking the lead. Segall’s rendition of Hot Chocolate’s 1978 single, “Every 1’s A Winner” is driven by fuzzy riffage and hard-hitting zeal – while maintaining the song’s original soulful swagger. From the get-go, “Fanny Dog” drops a dose of stripped back rock and roll architecture propelled by crunchy guitar chords and crisp vocals. This opening track is proof that simple lyrics are all you need to write an above-par song. Segall sings, “Fanny knows what her name is,” referring to his dog Fanny – as he stated with a grin when the song was performed on Conan.

Freedom’s Goblin is a roller coaster of no-frills balladry and robust, genre-bending chops. The jazz-glam juxtaposition of “The Main Pretender” melds together with Segall’s anthemic hooks – ornate with Cronin’s piercing alto sax. Similarly, “Talkin 3” is another jazz-infused ripper, with raw undertones, wailing saxophone and Segall’s growling rasp. One of the most admirable facets of Segall’s career is his DIY spirit and ability to amass a large fan base without seemingly standing on top of the world. His songs may never reach the airwaves of so called “alternative” radio stations. We may never see him at the Grammy Awards. But in this day and age, none of that matters. Music in 2018 is a parallel universe – with the old industry model struggling to stay relevant and an influx of independent artists taking the forefront. In the grand scheme of things, Ty Segall may be one of the most relevant musicians of our time.

Los Angeles garage rockers, Spencer Robinson and the Wolf Spiders recently released their brooding, whiskey-soak debut – Beneath the Surface. Now the band has released a the video of the album’s lead single, titled “Ten Years of Fire,” a song about “how a toxic relationship can kill you.” The eerie infusion of snappy guitars and ominous xylophone overtones are parallel with the song’s lyrics.

Director, Johnny DeVilla (also a band member), works his magic with a shift between black and white and colorful layers, with the help of Gary Robinson. The video encompasses the band’s performance and occasional hallway antics. You can watch below:
